As part of this year’s International Literacy Day (08 September), Edge Hill Students’ Union is embracing its charitable objectives and encouraging all Edge Hill students and staff to donate their second-hand books to the SU Offices (Upstairs in The Hub, Ormskirk Campus).

The books will be used to re-stock the community bookshelves in The Hub and around campus, and any surplus books will be donated to charities with objectives to help more people learn through reading and education.

Of the International Literacy Day celebrations, this year’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Officer, Rhiannon Muise, said: “As an SU, we want to create a space for students who have a love for literature, and that’s why we’re offering the bookshelves to create a small community of book-lovers on campus!

Donating a book couldn’t be easier. Simply gather any of your old novels, collections, anthologies, textbooks, children’s books (and more), and bring them to the Students’ Union Offices Upstairs in the Hub (across the bridge!).

International Literacy Day has taken place annually since 1967. Set up by Unesco, the celebration aims to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.

Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills.

While anyone is free to take part in helping ensure access to literature, the specific theme of International Literacy Day for 2021 is “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide.Find out more about this year’s theme here.
