Welcome back to yet another BUCS Match Report! This week... started as a disaster to say the least. The main problem we had was frozen pitches, which meant we unfortunately had a lot of cancelled fixtures (ah, who doen't love the indecisive British weather?). This actually takes us onto one of our only home fixtures of the day...
Our women's Hockey team took it into their own hands and refused to let the crappy weather ruin their fixture! Even though facilities management had told them they HAD to cancel the match, the girls grabbed their brooms, bags of salt and buckets of warm water (no, I'm not joking) and they took to the astro pitches, spending the next 3 hours literally defrosting the pitch. Of course, they managed to pull it off and at 3pm they were told the fixture was A-OK to go ahead. The girls faced a tough game against Liverpool John Moore's 2nd team but just as they didn't let the ice beat them, they weren't going to let another team get in their way. With goals from Anna (5), Becca (3), Bethan (1) and Em (1), they came away with an amazing 10-0 win!!! Man of the Match was awarded to Anna K who put in a great performance in defence and D*ck of the Day was unfortunately (for her) given to Em, who floored it after hitting the ball and managed to injure herself three times in one game (she's fine... not to worry!).
Onto our Badminton teams now. Another success story comes in the form of our women's 1st team. They faced Keele in the quarter finals of the cup and after fantastic performances from all players, they managed to come away with an unbelivable 6-2 win!! We're so proud of them for getting through to the SEMI FINALS. Yes, that's right. And you don't even have to wait that long to find out how they get on, as the Semi Finals are next Wednesday!
Our men's 2nd team unfortunately didn't fare as well in their game against the University of Liverpool. Sadly, even after all of their efforts, they couldn't hold onto the lead. Liverpool came away with the 6-2 win. But not to worry, we know they'll bounce back in their next fixture!!
Our men's Rugby League team were one of the last fixtures of the day and faced tricky opposition in Oxford Brookes. The game started fast and the lads showed no signs of stopping. With great performances from the whole team, they completely stormed through their game and finished with a 52-24 win! Well done to everyone involved, it was honestly amazing to watch.
We also had a few fixtures that were played last weekend and on Monday, so here's how they got on...
We'll start with our men's Futsal team who played on Sunday. They travelled all the way to Leeds to play in a Futsal tournament and faced two different oppositions. First up was Chester's (Chester Campus) team. The lads struggled slightly in this game (we'll blame this on the long travel time) and sadly they were beaten 8-2, but not to worry... because they absolutely smashed their next game. Facing Chester's (Warrington Campus) team, they bounced back and brought home a 7-0 win. Well done to all involved and we can't WAIT to see how you get on in your next tournament.
On Sunday we also had our American Football team take to the field. They faced Bangor's 1st team, in what they knew would be a tough fixture. HOWEVER, in true Team Edge Hill style they played the best they'd ever played against them in the whole three years. They held them to 0-0 at half time (which is an amazing small victory) and ended the game 22-6 to Bangor. There were smiles all around and that's all that really matters! Super proud of you all and let's keep it up for your next fixture.
Finally, our men's Football team played on Monday night against the University of Liverpool's men's 1st team. The game got off to a slow start, but after some great pressure from the whole team and a rare running spell from Jack Hunter, he managed to nick it from an opposition defender and rounded the keeper, giving Edge Hill the early lead they needed. Unfortunately the opposition hit back and after a successful free kick, they'd levelled the score. Liverpool scored yet another goal soon after, leaving Edge Hill 2-1 down. Changes from the sub bench gave our team an attacking boost and left Alex Brindle with a chance to get on the score sheet, after a lovely nutmeg through the centre back put him through onto the scoring path. The scoreline stood at 2-2 and unfortunately our lads could do no more. 2-2 was the final score and the team came away with a solid 1 point to add to the league table!
That's it for this week! Next week we have... CUP WEEK. It's a very busy week once again, with the added excitement of the Cup.
See you next week and we'll be telling you all about our team's Cup endevours!
