Anddddd we’re back with the BUCS Match Reports. We hope you didn’t miss us too much last week (even though we know you did). We’ll start with a few fixtures we had on Monday evening to mix it up a little bit. Then we’ll move onto the usual BUCS Wednesday report. So, let’s see how our teams got on on Monday…
Our Men’s Hockey team travelled to the University of Liverpool in hopes of returning with the win on Monday evening. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned (be warned, it’s a dramatic one). The lads struggled to get going during the game and after some drama (we’re talking Connor Lloyd forgetting EVERYTHING except his Hockey stick, Ross Hall receiving a yellow card for fighting and Dan Thomas being given a green card for kicking the ball away) the team did well to come away with the 1 goal from Nick Fletcher! The final score was 3-1 to the University of Liverpool and it’s safe to say that the team were disappointed with their performance. Man of the Match was awarded to James Ryan for being the only player to not do anything wrong during the match (we warned you it was bad) and the infamous ‘D*ck of the Day’ was given deservingly to Connor Lloyd. Maybe he won’t forget absolutely everything next time… right? Anyway, even after this performance the team are still 2nd in the league (which is amazing) and with only one match left, they need a win to hold onto that position. The great news is that you only have to get to the end of this match report and you'll find out exactly how they got on...
Our Women’s Football team also had a Monday evening fixture (even MORE excitement, which we bet you didn’t think was possible). They faced UCFB’s 1st team and after an amazing team performance, they managed to come away with a huge 6-1 win!! Player of the Match was awarded to Ella for yet another great performance. They’ve done so, SO well this season and with one match left, we know they’re going to continue their winning streak!!
Our 1st team had their most important game of the season yesterday… the league title decider. They HAD to win. A draw or a loss would’ve resulted in Salford University claiming the title so the nerves were in full swing. Once the first half was underway, the girls pretty much immediately gained a 1-0 lead, through a fantastic short corner that was tapped in by Captain Anna. However shortly after this, Salford came back with a great attack and managed to level the score line to 1-1. At half time, the girls knew they had a LOT of work to do as they desperately needed the win. They had their usual half time pep talk and made their way back onto the pitch. The pep talk MUST have worked as shortly after the second half had started, they came back with an exceptional goal that brought the score line back in our girls’ favour to 2-1 courtesy of Beth!! It doesn’t end there… the girls carried on pushing and Jenny scored a phenomenal sweeping goal that caught the keeper completely off guard and brought the score to a 3-1 lead! With 10 minutes left of game play, tensions were high and Salford pushed hard to try and get themselves back into it. They did just that with a fantastic straight strike from a short corner, making the score 3-2. With the score line so close, the girls knew they had to keep their cool and they did just that. Salford’s final goal wasn’t enough to stop them and the girls ended the game 3-2!!! Man of the Match was awarded to Cara for a solid performance and D*ck of the Day was given to Yasmin. This means that they won the league with 26 points! (Salford coming in a VERY close 2nd with 25 points… phew). It was a great game of Hockey from both teams and a fantastic way to end the season for the club with both women’s teams winning their league titles!
Now, as we promised... let's find out how the Men's Hockey team did in their game yesterday. They faced the University of Manchester in what they knew would be a tough game, yet one they could definitely win if they performed to their usual standard! With goals from Nick Fletcher (2) and George Thompson (1), the men's team absolutely stormed through their game (even if there were some minor injuries along the way). The game ended with a solid 3-1 win to Edge Hill and Man of the Match was awarded to Sam Butler for a great performance throughout. Some drama on the pitch though, as D*ck of the Day was awarded to Jac Horwood for getting all moody on the pitch and taking the penalty flick away from Andy after promising him it originally... don't worry, they've made up now!
We also had some other fixtures that were played on Wednesday, so here's how those teams got on:
That's it for this week's match report!! (Which is possibly the last one of the season...) Dependent on fixtures and any rearrangements, we may see you again next week!
