This week was a little bit quieter than usual, but thankfully we have some weekend and Monday fixtures coming up so it won't be quiet for too long!

Onto yesterday... It was a drama-filled day and our Women's Hockey club were at the forefront of this. We'll start with their 1st team, who faced the University of Manchester's 4th team. The girls went into the game feeling the pressure as they knew that if they lost this game, then it would really affect their league title chances. The game started well, but the girls did find themselves 1-0 down early on in the first half. After a strong push, the half time score was 2-2. The girls had their half time team talk and the second half was underway. Despite such an exciting first half, with great performances from everyone involved, the girls suddenly found themselves 5-3 down after multiple attacking plays from the opposition. They were left with only 7 minutes of play remaining and they knew they had to put everything they had left into it. The team took the decision to send their keeper off and play with a kicking back instead. This move allowed them to add another running player and put extra pressure on the opposition... and boyyy did it work. Knowing that they needed to put their all into the few remaining minutes in order to secure the league title, they did just that. After an amazing performance to end the game, they came away with an unbelievable 6-5 win!! This was the toughest game of hockey the girls had played ALL season, so to come away with such a dramatic win was incredible. Goals were from; Anna with 1; Becky with 1; Skinner with 2; Jenny with 1; and Beth with 1. Man of the Match went to Beth for who played amazingly well and "D*ck of the Day" was awarded to Yasmine for flooring it before the game had even started (the pressure must have got to her...) Their next game is definitely one to watch out for, as it's their last game of the season and is against their title rivals... Salford.

The drama doesn't stop there. Onto the Women's 2nd team now, who went into their game knowing they only needed a draw (at the least) to secure the league title. They faced tough opposition yet again in the form of the University of Manchester and it was highly contested throughout. At half time, the girls had managed to keep a steady 0-0 scoreline. So now they just had to hold onto this and the league title was theirs!! Thankfully they kept their cool and worked extremely hard to keep the opposition away from their goal and kept the 0-0 draw to the final whistle. With only one league game left, they have officially won their league and are the champions!! How AMAZING is that?! Man of the Match was awarded to three playes this week. Mandy, Em and Emma for their great performances. And "D*ck of the Day" was (unsurprisingly) given to Chelsea for not jusy falling over, but for fully diving onto the floor (she's alright, don't worry). This is a fantastic result for the girls, as they had a tough season last year. We're super proud of them!! Now the pressure's on for the 1st team to follow in thier footsteps...

Onto our Men's Tennis team now who faced Keele's 2nd team. This game was another nervous one as it could've really affected their league title chances. But our men's team didn't let their nerves get the better of them and they came away with a solid 10-2 win!! They all put in some great performances and now all they have to do is win their game next week and the title is there's. How amazing is that?! We have full faith in them (no pressure lads) and we're sure they'll do great.

Sadly, we have some not so great news regarding our Men's Football team and how they got on in their game versus a tough UCLAN side yesterday. The guys started off slow in the first half, where the opposition could've easily been 3/4-0 up! But thankfully the damage wasn't too bad at half time and UCLAN were ONLY leading 1-0. Our team managed to step it up a little bit in the second half and their play looked much better, but unfortunately UCLAN managed to get another goal in, making the score 2-0! They seem to be doing this a lot this season, but they did get on top for the last 15 minutes and even managed to get a goal back. However it was too little, too late and the score ended in a 2-1 defeat. Their next game sees them face Newcastle away in the Cup on Monday, so we'll let them off with the excuse that they're saving themselves for then... right? (Just go with it).

We also had a few other fixtures played on Wednesday, so here's how those teams got on:

  • Women's Badminton 2nd v University of Manchester 2nd 3-5
  • Women's Rugby Union 2nd v University of Manchester 2nd 52-10
  • Netball 2nd v Bangor University 1st 29-55
  • Netball 4th v University of Bolton 1st 47-26

Annnnnd that's everything for this week! If you're lucky, we might even be back with another match report after our weekend and Monday evening fixtures...

We'll see you then!
